1. What are ceramides?

They are intercellular lipids, which provide softness and structure to the skin. They are found naturally in our own skin and are mainly responsible for maintaining the cohesion of the stratum corneum, preventing dehydration. They are essential to maintain the barrier function in good condition.

2. What kind of ingredient is it?

Active ingredient used to hydrate, provide emollience and provide structure to the skin, filling in gaps to maintain the barrier function in good condition. We can find it in a concentration of 4-10% in serums, creams, masks, balms... that is, in an endless number of cosmetics designed to prevent transepidermal water loss and keep the skin healthy and strong.

3. How do I identify it in the list of ingredients ( INCI )?

There are different types of ceramides, although the most used in cosmetics are type 3, you will find it in the list of ingredients as Ceramide NP . 

Other ceramides (ordered from most to least used in cosmetics):

  • Ceramide AP (Ceramide 6),
  • Ceramide EOP (Ceramide 9)
  • Ceramide NS (Ceramide 2)
  • Ceramide EOH (Ceramide 4)
  • Ceramide AS (Ceramide 5)
  • Ceramide AH (Ceramide 7)

4. What properties do ceramides have?

  • Dry, very dry skin.

  • Dehydrated oily skin.
