CONSULT PROPERTIES DICTIONARY

1. What is squalene and squalane?

Squalene is a physiological hydrocarbon that is present in the skin. It is part of the sebaceous secretion of the skin and is responsible for protecting it against oxidative stress and solar radiation.

Over the years, the skin loses squalene, becoming drier and rougher, which is why it is important to include ingredients that provide emollience such as squalene or squalane.

Squalene was obtained from shark liver, so for ethical reasons, it began to be obtained from olive oil . It can also be found in rice oil.

But since squalene oxidizes very easily, a derivative is being used: squalane, which, unlike squalene, is hydrogenated and therefore better preserves its properties and the shelf life of the cosmetic that contains it is extended.

2. What kind of ingredients is it?

Active ingredient present in a multitude of cosmetics, from cleansers to moisturizing and nourishing serums, creams and masks. You can also find it in makeup and sunscreens because it leaves a very pleasant silky finish on the skin.

3. How do I identify it in the list of ingredients ( INCI )?

Squalene: s qualene

Squalane: s qualane

4. What properties does it have?

  • Occlusive moisturizer
  • Emollient moisturizer
  • Provides flexibility and elasticity
  • Antioxidant

  • Dehydrated oily skin
  • Sensitive skin, with redness or with altered skin barrier
  • Psoriasis and dermatitis*
  • Photoaging
  • Devitalized skin with lack of luminosity
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Stains

*Always consult with a dermatologist, since they are skin diseases and must be diagnosed and treated by a specialist doctor.

6. Contraindications:

  • There is no.

7. Recommendations:

Both ingredients have the same benefits for the skin but we definitely recommend squalane because it is better preserved within the formula.

You can use it both day and night or in both routines.

8. Frequently asked questions about squalene and squalane:

Are they comedogenic ingredients?

No, neither squalene nor squalane are comedogenic.

If I have oily skin, can I use it?

It is a natural component of sebum and when included in a cosmetic formula, if you choose one suitable for oily skin, squalene or squalane will provide you with a soft to velvety finish, absorbing very well without leaving a greasy trace.

Which is best for stains?

Both options are ideal for providing luminosity and protecting your skin from oxidative stress. Note that squalane oxidizes less.

If I have dermatitis or psoriasis, how will applying a cosmetic that contains squalene or squalane help me?

Remember that if you have a dermatosis of any type, you should first consult with your dermatologist.

In both alterations, the skin's barrier function is compromised, leaving the skin more exposed and dehydrating more easily. So including ingredients like squalene or squalane will help keep your skin soft, hydrated and calm.
