Zinc oxide (NANO)
What is zinc oxide (NANO)?
Zinc oxide is a white powder widely used in cosmetics, specifically in sunscreens . The main characteristic of nanoparticles, like non-nano zinc oxide, is that they do not penetrate the skin. Zinc oxide particles are sometimes coated with another cosmetic ingredient in order to change their appearance or how they react in a mixture.
How is it different from non-nano zinc oxide?
Physical filters have the peculiarity of leaving a whitish layer on the skin when the particle size is high. Therefore, the size has been reduced to avoid this unwanted effect and this is where we find nanoparticles .
Chemical and physical studies have been conducted to gain insight into the properties of zinc oxide nanoparticles compared to non-nano zinc oxide. They have the same crystal structure and show similarity with respect to most physical and chemical characteristics. Zinc oxide in this form is slightly more soluble than normal.
Both sunscreens containing zinc oxide nanoparticles and those containing microparticles are completely safe.
However, the CCSC approves the use of nanoparticles in sunscreens in concentrations of up to 25%.
