Zinc oxide

What is zinc oxide?

It is a whitish powdered mineral which has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries and which we can now find in numerous cosmetic products. In fact, in cosmetics its action stands out as blocking solar radiation (preventing burns, spots and photo aging), astringent (reduces the amount of acne) and anti-inflammatory (forms a thin protective layer that helps to recover wounds and wounds more effectively). inflammations).

Specifically, zinc oxide can be found in sunscreens and is considered one of the best physical sunscreens in addition to being recognized as safe and effective by the FDA.

Dermatologists and pediatricians recommend zinc oxide for its safety, effectiveness, and reduced likelihood of skin irritation.

How does it benefit me?

Zinc oxide is a physical filter, it is characterized by creating a protective layer on the surface of the skin, thus protecting us against UVB and UVA rays at the same time. For this reason it is considered one of the best physical sunscreens. UVB rays increase in summer, causing skin burns and becoming carcinogenic, while UVA rays predominate at other times of the year and cause long-term skin damage such as premature skin aging.

How exactly does it work?

This mineral, unlike chemical filters, does not penetrate the skin but acts from the outermost layer of the skin, offering a high degree of protection. Its function is to reflect sunlight when it comes into contact with the skin and in this way, it does not absorb the sun's rays, thus avoiding any type of damage.

Therefore, it is suitable for use in sunscreen lotions, both for adults and children.

Is it harmful?

It is suitable for all skin types, even hypersensitive ones, and should not cause any side effects. In fact, being a natural mineral, it is biodegradable, non-toxic and also respects marine flora. On the other hand, these sunscreens are usually thicker and usually leave a whitish trace on the skin during application, which can be considered unsightly (but this is not always the case).

Summary

  • Safe and effective according to the FDA and dermatologists

  • Does not penetrate the skin

  • Recommended for use in adults and children
