“If you don't like bacteria, you're on the wrong planet.”
Today we are going to tell you briefly and in a very simple way what the microbiome is, why it is so important and what you should take into account when we talk about the microbiome.
What exactly is the microbiome?
The microbiome is what we call all the microorganisms that live inside and outside our body . Most of these little “tourists” live in your gut, but you also have a skin microbiome, an oral microbiome, a genital microbiome, a nasal microbiome, and even… your belly button has a microbiome!
If you think of them as continents and your body as a planet it will be much easier to understand.
The importance of the microbiome is high and every day we continue to discover more about this new organ. It is one of the most current topics in health and will surely continue to be so for a long time.
These microbes (which form the ecosystem of our microbiota) are the ones that protect us, fight for you, synthesize some of our foods or even our hormones. And when something goes wrong… the microbiome ends up altering. If we had to define the role of the microbiome in one sentence, Gallinée Beauté does it as follows:
“The microbiome helps regulate your immunity”
The 3 most important facts about the microbiome
- It is yours and totally yours. Your bacterial composition is so unique that it could be used in the future instead of fingerprints .
- The question that divides the world of science right now is: is there a brain microbiome ? That is, do bacteria live in your brain and influence your thoughts? It is not yet known.
- We know very little. It is a very wide and very unknown world, there is still a lot to explore.
If you are passionate about the world of the microbiota, Gallinée Beauté recommends the TED Talk by the father of the microbiome: Rob Knight .
